What are Schrader Valves?

Bicycle Schrader valves are wider and usually shorter than Presta valves.

They are more universal than Presta valves because they are the valve type that you see on car tires.

Bicycle Schrader valves contain a threaded outer wall (for a cap) whose bottom half is wrapped within the rubber and a spring-loaded determine valve within the center.

The valve lets air flow only in one direction, in order to pump air into your bike tire, you must press the inner pin down.

It will allow you to test the air pressure in the bike tire. Schrader valves are typically found on budget-friendly hybrid, mountain, and city bicycles.

What Are Presta Valves?

Bike Presta valves are slimmer and taller than Schrader valves. They are created entirely out of metal, taper towards the highest, and are typically completely threaded.

These bicycle Presta valves are slightly more advanced to use, they have a locknut rather than a spring to confirm closure.

That’s why the Presta valves are safer when it involves holding air pressure and they can endure much higher air pressures (up to 125psi) than a Schrader can manage.

They were actually created to be used on bikes, so it’s highly impossible to see them on motorbikes or even cars.

Bicycle Presta valves are typically found on the higher-end mountain, gravel, and road bicycles for improved performance.

What Are Schrader Valve Pros and cons?

For you are familiar with Schrader valves because you do find them on car tires and every kind of other things that is inflatable.

Schrader valves are easy to find a way to inflate, you just head to the gas station or use your air compressor at home, unlike the bicycle Presta valve

It’s easier to find a replacement tube of Schrader valve when you need one because you can find them in any kind of entry-level bike

What Are Presta Valve Pros and Cons?

Presta valves are familiar on higher-end bikes and are not found as commonly on cruiser bicycles, kids’ bicycles, and entry-level bicycles.

If you are a new biker, you would possibly be a little bit confused about the valve on your new bicycle.

Presta valves are skinnier and usually taller than Schrader valves and in order to pump air into the tire (or let the air out), you must unscrew the top.

This locking mechanism is unlike a Schrader valve which uses an inside spring to provide closure. In order to open the Presta valve, you just unscrew this lock nut left, and to close it you need to screw it right again.

History of Presta and Schrader valves

In 1891, Schrader valves were created by a German-American man named Schrader and in the 1920s, Presta valves were created by a French man named Sclaverand.

At first, Schrader valves were standard on bikes, and as road tires and wheels became skinnier over time, then bikes demand a more narrow valve.

At this time, that’s where the Presta valve gained popularity in cycling. Nowadays, Presta valves are used almost exclusively on bikes.

Schrader valves have a wide range of applications including bicycle tires, hydraulic equipment, car tires, HVAC systems, etc.

What is the purpose of the Schrader valve?

The Schrader valve contains two main components which are a poppet valve that sits inside and the threaded hollow shell.

The Schrader valve is made in such a way that it lets the user either remove or add air or refrigerant in a high-pressure environment with no leakage.

Both Tubes Vs Tubeless Have Valves

Many bike tires have tubes inside them to carry air, however, many bicycle tires are now tubeless.

Tubeless tires are that have sealant inside them and which does not need a tube to carry air in.

A bike tube has a valve, it’s either Presta Schrader or Presta and a tubeless tire also has a valve even though there’s no tube inside.

These valves in tubeless are simply screwed into the wheel and most of the valves in tubeless are Presta valves

Which is better a tubeless tire or a tubed one?

Tubeless tires provide great traction, they allow you to climb more simply and corner easily because you do not need to worry about pinch flats, you can simply run tubeless tires at a far lower air pressure than tubed tires.

Typically, about 10 psi lower is safe. The main advantage of tubeless is that it is a big one, is the substantially lower risk of puncturing.

Simple because there’s no inner tube to puncture, even from sharp objects penetrating the bicycle tire or, more rarely, pinch flats when the inner tube is squashed between the tire and rim.


In conclusion, these two valves are great and can depend on you which one is the best after you have read both Schrader and Presta valves.
